The bus fell over - we too (PH)

The bus fell over - we too (PH)

Sometimes you get into situations where you’re just dumb-struck. You can’t believe it is happening, you simply don’t know how to react, because the event is so surreal – as if you have landed on a different planet. Asia is another ‘planet’ allright, but I love that planet and its inhabitants. That’s why this top 10 is actually longer than only 10 of those outlandish situations (and could be yet much longer)…

  1. The bus skidding and toppling over into the ditch on the mud road to El Nido – Youtube clips here (Philippines)
  2. Gay guys kissing and making out… in the Killing Fields of all places (Cambodia)
  3. Going tubing in Vang Vieng, floating down the river and swinging off the cliffs completely drunk (as anybody else) – Some Youtube clips here (LaosContinue reading

Blog 'n' Beer at Sunset

Blog 'n' Beer at Sunset

Maybe I’m curious by nature, or maybe Asia is a completely different planet, offering loads of new experiences by default. So I went through quite some ‘first time experiences‘ – many off them quite nice – to be repeated. Some nice new worlds opened themselves to me…

  1. Falling in love with the sunset – no matter where
  2. Snorkeling around the islands off Palawan (Philippines)
  3. Being on a bus that skids off the road and topples over into the ditch (PhilippinesContinue reading

Songkran Water Festival (TH)

Songkran Water Festival (TH)

I’ve been in many situations and met many people during my 6 months in Asia, but there are some highlights that I’ll never forget. Those were the moments when tears came to my eyes, the moments that I wish would last forever, or which I would love to repeat…

  1. The wetter than wet Songkran water festival (New Year) in Thailand, everybody splashing everybody and shouting ‘Happy Songkran’
  2. The most emotional birthday ever with my Boracay angel, him crying because he was touched by the present I gave him, me crying because he was so sweet crying (Philippines)
  3. Gay life in Pnom Penh, meeting the Diva on stage and celebrating new year together (CambodiaContinue reading

And then the pilot pulled out the manual (PH)

And then the pilot pulled out the manual (PH)

These are some of the moments that got my heart beating faster. It’s those moments that you dread that they might happen – and then they did happen indeed. Who said that one has to go through ‘downs’ to appreciate the ‘ups’?

  1. Flying a shaky mini-airplane through windy weather (Philippines)
  2. Being in a bus that skids in the mud and topples over into the ditch (Philippines)
  3. My Icelandic Kaupthing bank going bankrupt and threatening to eat my savings in the process (they found a buyer in the mean time though)  Continue reading

Superb Angkor Wat temples - but too many (KH)

Superb Angkor Wat temples - but too many (KH)

There is a fair share of must-see monuments. Mostly I would be allergic to follow what the guidebooks say, but the following top 10 of monuments/buildings are definitely worth a detour (or would justify a trip there). This would be more the ‘official’ things to see, rather than the feel-good quaint places.

  1. The ancient Angkor Wat temples (especially Angkor Tom & Ta Phrom) (near Siem Reap, Cambodia)
  2. Glittery Wat Pho Buddhist Vatican & Royal Palace (Bangkok, Thailand)
  3. Stomach churning Killing Fields & Toul Sleng (S21) school turned into prison (Phnom Phen, CambodiaContinue reading

Hammock with a view - Muang Ngoi

Hammock with a view - Muang Ngoi

My travels are over (how sad – finally back home – huray) – so it’s time to look back – here is my top 10 of the places I found most quaint, cute, picturesque, beautiful, pleasing to the eye,… Basically these are the places where I’d love to linger and just hang around… Forever.

  1. Muang Ngoi sleepy riverside village, one street, no cars, no electricity, no mobile phone coverage, in a bamboo hut overlooking the limestone valley & river (Laos)
  2. Postcard like deserted white sand Puka beach lined by turquoise water and overhanging coconut trees on Boracay island (Philippines)
  3. The beautiful yellow ancient shop houses along the river in Hoi An old town, superbly lit by lanterns at night (VietnamContinue reading

Top 10 best food

Falang Rolls - sushi of banana, peanut butter and sesame (LA)

Falang Rolls - sushi of banana, peanut butter and sesame (LA)

When traveling around for 6 months you come accross lots of different food, going from very international (I just needed a pizza or hamburger every once so often) to very local specialities on the corner of the street. There’s lots of yummy food in Asia (usually involving rice in some form or shape). But ther’s also some funny food (such as fried tarantulas, grilled cockroaches or chicken embryos), which I graciously declined (one does not have to try everything in lif…).

My top 10 Yummy Food

  1. The (in)famous and delicious Falang Rolls in Muang Ngoi (Laos)
  2. Sweet sticky rice from a street stall in Nha Trang with my ex (Vietnam) or the sticky rice with sweet mango in season (Thailand)
  3. A cheese & wine evening on my hotel balcony in Phom Penh with cheese, French baguette & red wine bought expesively from Lucky supermarket (CambodiaContinue reading
